Design Approach

I work in both traditional and contemporary styles designing gardens that evoke a real sense of mood and place. I like to work with distinctive local materials such as stone and metal using them to create strong and simple shapes. Planting is always important in my designs, adding to the sense of movement and mood. I believe good design draws on the strengths of a site to tackle problems and inspire solutions.

My Work

As a Sheffield based designer practising in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire I have experience of a wide range of public and private projects. I have designed gardens and outdoor spaces in a range of different settings including projects for a local NHS Trust, communal gardens and landscape areas for new high density housing and a diverse selection of private projects including gardens in South West France. I use local crafts people where possible for the bespoke elements in my designs and have enjoyed collaborating with local artists on individual projects. I have a background in community development and enjoy working on user and community led projects.15 years experience designing gardens combined with a passion for planting has enabled me to respond sensitively to the requirements of a brief to create considered and beautiful designs.

History

I began developing my garden design business, initially as a part-time venture, in 1999 after undertaking a design course at the Open College of the Arts. My business has grown through personal recommendation and word of mouth and I made the decision to become a full-time garden designer in 2004. Since then my portfolio of projects has expanded and in 2008 I became a registered member of The Society of Garden Designers.
